In the future, Telefónica Germany will also rely on Huawei as a partner for the 5G network expansion – despite the ongoing discussions. Huawei is “a very reliable partner that delivers top technological performance”, said Telefónica’s German CEO Markus Haas to die Welt recently. In the expansion of the 5G mobile communications infrastructure, the company would therefore like to continue to rely not only on Nokia but also on the telecommunications supplier from China. The precondition, of course, is a successful security certification of the technology and the companies according to the legal regulations in Germany.
Network start for 5G still 2020
In the coming years, Telefónica Germany, which sells mobile and fixed-network connections in Germany under the name O², intends to invest massively in the expansion of the 5G network. “We are investing additional money to capture market share, especially in rural areas and with business customers, with a high-performance mobile and fixed-network infrastructure behind us,” confirms Haas. According to current planning, the expansion of the new 5G mobile communications standard will begin in the first quarter of 2020, so that customers will be able to benefit from the new technology in the coming year.
The 5G expansion in the five major cities of Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, Cologne and Frankfurt is to be completed by the end of 2021. By the end of 2022, a total of 30 cities with 16 million inhabitants are to be supplied with the new mobile communications standard.
Partnership with Nokia and Huawei
For the 5G network, Telefónica Germany would like to continue to cooperate with several manufacturers. In this way, the company will continue to create diversity in its networks and avoid dependencies on one provider. Telefónica Deutschland is therefore planning to rely on the proven strategic partners Nokia and Huawei to set up the 5G access network (Radio Access Network). Initially, however, this cooperation is subject to reservations.
Only after a successful security certification of the technology and the companies according to the new legal regulations in Germany will the cooperation be continued. Telefónica Deutschland wants to take account of the political process of establishing new security guidelines, which has not yet been completed, without delaying the start of the 5G expansion.
Nokia and Huawei will initially be equally responsible for equipping the mobile phone sites with modern 5G antenna technology. The company is expected to decide on further cooperation and future technology partners for the core mobile network in the coming year.
